What is Mediation?
Mediation is a facilitated process by an impartial third party in which individuals in conflict can come together to engage in a structured conversation with the intention of reaching resolution. This is intended to be an opportunity to engage in the conflict when other options for resolution have been exhausted. Mediation is an entirely voluntary process on all sides, SCRC will not require anyone to participate.

If you are interested in mediation or believe that it could be beneficial, please contact our office to set up an appointment with one of our ombuds. We will work with you to better understand the situation and offer consultation. It may be appropriate to first start with other steps before mediation is feasible; we will work with you to develop a plan for addressing your concern.
Checklist For a Successful Mediation:
- The conflict involves only a few people (2-3)
- Everyone involved is willing to participate
- Individuals are open to dialogue
- The purpose of mediation is to engage in conversation; if verbal communication between parties is not possible we may look to address the conflict in a different way
- Individuals are open to reaching a resolution and willing to compromise
- Some effort to address or resolve the conflict has already been made
- Participants are willing to listen to each other
- Participants commit to using respectful language and behavior
If you have any questions about this process or would like to discuss pursuing mediation, please contact SCRC at [email protected], submit a contact form, or call us at 612-624-7272.
